Jonny Greenwood has long been the go-to composer for director Paul Thomas Anderson, who’s recruited the Radiohead guitarist to score his films There Will Be Blood, The Master, Inherent Vice, Phantom Thread and One Battle After Another. If Greenwood ever stopped collaborating with Anderson for whatever reason, Este Haim is ready and willing to take his place.
“I think Paul is one of the greatest directors of not just our generation, but of all time,” the eldest HAIM sister said during a press conference at the Berlin International Film Festival.
Anderson has directed multiple HAIM videos, and Este’s sister Alana Haim stars in the lead role of his 2021 movie, Licorice Pizza. Alana also has a role in One Battle After Another.
“I feel very, very lucky that I’ve gotten to work with him on most of the music videos for HAIM,” Este said of Anderson. “I sort of view him as kind of, like, my older brother.”
She added, “If Jonny Greenwood happens to wanna retire, I will be right there for Paul whenever he would like.”
In the meantime, Este did compose the score for the movie Sunny Dancer, which is premiering at Berlin.
As for Greenwood, his One Battle After Another score is nominated for an Oscar.
